Comment:

The film begins with an overview of a typical American residential area. Sunshine and the gentle ballad sounds Blue velvet which gives the film its title. Suddenly one of the neighbors have a heart attack, the music loses strength and is replaced by a disturbing noise and the camera is inserted into the grass of one of the gardens of the neighborhood, discovering in him a severed human ear. This already tells us that we will attend a descent into hell hidden under a nice appearance, given the dreamlike tone of the film, this can be seen as a metaphor for a journey into the subconscious, to combat the most threatening oneself, which is almost always the center of the film by David Lynch. Blue Velvet be seen as a modern fairy tale in which Jeffrey, the protagonist, you have to shape their identity and move into adulthood with a traumatic initiation process which must deal with a witch, Dorothy, and an ogre (Frank, Dorothy's lover) to win the princess, Sandy.

In this journey of initiation to the dark bowels of the city, or of self, sexuality plays a very important but does not normally stand out erotomaniac Lynch as all his films have a strong sexual atmosphere. In Blue Velvet dared to put first on the table for characters with a distinctly sexual fetish, years before the bizarre cult was fashionable; this film was actually quite a countercurrent time as the 80 dominated by the asexuality and innocence somewhat forced productions Steven Spielberg and his imitators, always looking for label film for all audiences. Lynch distanced himself with this work clearly aimed at an adult audience in which they openly show the cruel ritual of domination and submission, on the edge of rape, who play Frank and Dorothy. Frank appears as an adult child as sadistic and perverse as dependent, unable to control his sexual drive and to give moral or emotional dimension, Dorothy, both fairy and witch reaffirms its role of victim to the point of investing in someone like Jeffrey, who is reluctant to be the executioner and therefore will to assume another role and be humiliated, and that Dorothy does not support sex without power games. Their strange relationship with this sadomasochistic initiation Jeffrey will serve to confront his fear of women and the demons of his own sexuality, represented by Frank, destroy and thereby turn the witch in a fairy good. In later films of David Lynch, the protagonist is no longer able to carry out successful completion of this process and is involved in a self-destructive nightmare, as in Lost Highway .
