After spending years at home raising their children, Sheba Hart searches work as an art teacher in a school. There you have it a little hard to get respect from the young students, but it helps out Barbara, one of the most veteran teachers. The two sisters are best friends until one night Barbara discovers Sheba having sex with Steven, a student of only 15.

Comment:

The comments Barbara notes in her diary and reads us show off his approach to his workmate much younger as a deliberate plan to conquer. Is attracted to her and never referred to Sheba as a friend or show empathy, but analyzes it in terms similar to how a scientist talk about the guinea pig in an experiment. So we know from the outset that the friendship is really a stalking: Barbara Sheba acts like a pederast with a child. You win your trust gradually, through small favors concerned until his victim is held captive in the spider web he has woven. Taking advantage of the secrets entrusted to the person harassed, the harasser's used to wrap a moral blackmail, emotional and sexual finally.

Throughout the film we sense, and later confirmed, that Barbara had the same pattern with his "friend" earlier, he had to leave his job to get rid of it. The stalker, who is not even able to take to herself that she is a lesbian and that their interest in their victims is basically sexual, is not able to have a heart to heart relationship with another person: their way of relating is always abuse, all the other despotic request without offering sincere feeling really no return. The result is an enormous solitude interrupted occasionally by these abusive relationships that invariably end badly, with serious damages of any kind to his victims, and also frustrating for herself, which of course at all times considered the other as the only guilty of these failures.

But Sheba meets turn quite a few conditions that make it easy prey for a vampire as Barbara. Greatly immature, he married his young college professor, which implies that we always had a fragile personality that requested the support of someone older. The past year has been stuck at home looking after their children make it even more naive and helpless when faced with a job and real life problems. Therefore

credible to begin a relationship with one of his students, unlike Barbara, Sheba does not use strategies to seduce or dominate someone younger, but it is the Otherwise, their lack of personality and maturity are not known to be above and cut the flirtations of a teenager. Barbara succeeds in full to see the passion of his companion a simple bourgeois romantic fantasy about a boy poor victim of a difficult family situation and a great talent to be discovered, when the reality is that Steven, the boy, is a perfectly normal teenager also normal with a family without money problems and no significant talent Sheba not only carried away, but keeps the relationship on a completely unconscious, not knowing what you want or think about the serious risks that entails.

The film does a wonderful portrayal of two protagonists, played by two actresses. However, the voice of Barbara newspaper is an underscore that simplifies and reduces unhealthy friendship story about genre conventions rather trite thriller without giving the viewer the possibility to realize itself obsessive personality Barbara. Synopsis:

Rath
The severe teacher is alarmed to discover that their students attend in the evening a gambling den of dubious morality to hear sing Lola the showgirl. As he approached the local to scare young people go there, he can not avoid being lured to the charms of the singer.

Comment:

As is often the talk of old films, The Blue Angel is seen today, innocent and quite simple. But at the time strutting Marlene Dietrich wearing his underwear in the style of cabaret and women were something extremely shocking vulgar. Today it seems normal to see in the movies prostitutes, people who live on the street and all sorts of situations within the sordid environments in real life, but in 1930 the film was far more puritanical and this film was the most erotic you could imagine. In fact, the daughter of an era of relative permissiveness; few years later the censorship of Hollywood or other places and would not have consented. Professor Rath

appears to be a guardian of moral order and a man of convictions railways, but is not really a repressed that ignores what is life. When visiting the nightclub where Lola works to rescue their children from vice, has its first contact with the real world outside of books, his glaring weakness. Is captivated by the principles chicay all fall apart very quickly because they are based on reflection and experience, but only ignorance and prejudice. Their behavior shows that it is useless moralizing, Rath, in theory a great sage, is overwhelmed by the situation and has nothing to cling to the face for the first time in his life as a real conflict is to be loved.

What could have been a liberation, a conscious decision to break with a life that no longer fills, it is not because there is such a decision is dismissed from his job for his licentious behavior and start a new life working in the mobile world and Lola night because he does not no other choice. So do not start a second life, as seen in other films discussed in the blog, but a free fall.

Rath is a pathetic character and worthy of pity at his own stupidity and lack of resources to deal with life, but from a conservative viewpoint, which is chaired by the film and probably would prevail for the director and for viewers of the day, the blame for their misfortune is the femme fatale who has seduced. Lola is always displayed as an object of desire and a male fantasy about what you want, and also what they fear in a woman, the script does not develop as a character, never know what you think or feel or we see more than a stereotype. Marlene Dietrich is precisely one of the top representatives in their films under the orders of Josef von Sternberg, this concept of woman-fetish, as misogynistic as attractive. Scenes

Highlights:

certainly most famous sequence is Marlene Dietrich film showing her stockings and suspenders while singing Falling in love again , the star of his song repertoire.

Anecdotes:

  • There are two versions of the film to be shot simultaneously, one in English and one in German, a usual practice in the early years of talkies. In the actors speak English with a heavy German accent.
  • This is the first major production of sound films in Germany.
  • This film launched Marlene Dietrich as a star and erotic myth, besides being the beginning of a long series of works joint between actress and director Josef Von Sternberg. About
director:

Josef Von Sternberg (Vienna 1894 - Hollywood 1969) was chosen to carry out The Blue Angel, the first major German sound film work, after the great success of his earlier silent film, The Last Command (1928). The rise to power of the Nazis made the decision to move to Hollywood with his muse and lover apparently Marlene Dietrich. They both carry out a series of films much appreciated by critics but which are too sophisticated for the American cinema of the time. Their insufficient blockbuster caused the decline of his career, which will continue to work much more routine. His fascination with the beauty and eroticism ambiguous Dietrich is evident in the six films they shot together.
